What must I do to inherit Eternal Life ?

Eternal life is an important subject today just as it was during the days of Jesus Christ’s physical presence on earth.

On different occasions, Jesus was asked the same question on how to inherit eternal life by a rich young ruler (Luke 18:18) and a conniving lawyer (Luke 10:25).

In John chapter 5, Jesus exposes the unbelieving Jews when He tells it to their face “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life” -(John 5:39.

Dear reader and listener, searching, examining or studying  the scriptures is not eternal life. Similarly, moral living, attending church regularly, or performing many good deeds are encouraging but they do not earn you eternal life .

So, If you’re also asking the same question, “How do I get eternal life?” the only answer I have for you is: “have faith in Jesus Christ“- (John 3:15,16).

Faith or believe in Jesus Christ saves you and also activates your new life in Christ –(Ephesians 2:8, John 14:6). Jesus came to seek and save the lost and your salvation package from God includes eternal life.

I want you to know that faith in Jesus Christ is and remains the only genuine path to eternal life! This is how John puts it : “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:11-12 )

All who put their faith in Christ Jesus are saved! They can begin to live their everlasting or eternal life in Christ right now – (1 Thessalonians 5:9-10)

What is Eternal Life ?

Eternal life is a gift from God- (Romans 6:23). It is the guaranteed assurance that other faiths don’t have and can’t give you.

Truth is, no one ceases to exist when they die. You will live forever, either rejoicing in heaven or gnashing your teeth in hell. In the  story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke chapter 16, we read that both men died, yet both men continued to live; Lazarus in Abraham’s bosom and the rich man in hell, being tormented .

Eternal life is therefore more than just life after death. It is a brand new life in Jesus Christ. It is knowing your God .-(John 17:3).

John 3:36 says, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Just like the rich young ruler in Mark chapter 10, some people have placed their faith in their status and material possessions. They have therefore walked away from Jesus Christ. Others also refuse to hear anything about the Gospel of Jesus Christ which produces faith. Scripture says the faith you need for salvation comes by hearing the word of God -(Romans 10:17).

Aside being denied life, the verse 36 of John chapter 3 says the wrath of God abides with those who refuse to believe in Jesus Christ. .

On the other hand, if you accept and believe in Jesus Christ, you have eternal life. Jesus embraces you immediately. This means you get to experience and enjoy God right now and every day, while you look forward to heaven someday. Eternal life is your current possession.

In Revelation 3:20, we see a willingness on the part of Jesus to have a relationship with us. He says when you hear His voice and invite Him in, He will dine with you and also be with you. That’s a promised friendship!

This is what makes eternal life a relationship between God and man. John confirms that eternal life is not a thing or a theory but a relationship with a Personality- (1 John 1:1, 2, 3).

Eternal life is an interactive relationship where you get to speak to God in prayer through Jesus Christ and He speaks to you through His word and His Spirit-the Holy Spirit.

I invite you  to accept Jesus Christ this minute by confessing Him as your Lord and Savior. Believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved! – (Romans 10:9-10, Acts 16:30,31).

Salvation entitles you to live in heaven someday but that does not mean sitting idle and waiting for that day.

Begin to enjoy your eternal life relationship with God through Christ, on earth, as it is in heaven. Begin to tell others about your new relationship in Christ to attract them.

Understand your salvation in Jesus Christ –(Part 1)

“…….And in all your getting, get understanding.” -Proverbs 4:7

You are saved. Glory be to God! But do you understand your salvation based on what Christ has done for you?

If you are a regular viewer of our daily broadcast on social media, #FAITHMOMENTS, you must be familiar with this phrase- “In all thy getting, get understanding”. The phrase is captured from Proverbs chapter 4 :7 which is also my refence verse for this article. You must have also heard the many times Patrick has said “what you don’t understand, can’t benefit you”.

Scripture teaches that understanding will keep you-Proverbs 2:11. This is why Bible admonishes us to get understanding in all that we acquire while on this earth. I want you to know that without an understanding of your salvation, you may never enjoy the full benefits of it.

Salvation is a 100% complete package God has delivered to you through His son Jesus Christ. It is by grace through faith alone. By understanding what Christ has done for you and who you have become though your salvation, you will be able to live fully, the benefits of accepting Jesus.

Salvation is only  through Jesus Christ

The word saved means to be rescued from harm or danger. However, to be saved in regard to God’s salvation through Jesus Christ means deliverance from the wages of sin, which is death, into an eternal life.

Salvation is an everlasting or eternal  life. In Isaiah 45:17, salvation is referred to as “everlasting salvation” and in Hebrews 5:9, it is called “eternal salvation”. To have eternal life is to have Jesus Christ-1 John 5:11.

Salvation is so important;  the Bible describes it as “So great a salvation “ in Hebrews 2:3.

There is only one way to salvation and that way is Jesus Christ, the son of God, as captured in John 14:6 . In John 10:9, Jesus specifically describes Himself as the “door to salvation”. We are therefore to believe in Him for eternal life -John 3:16.

In all of scripture, Jesus Christ is the only one described as “the one who takes away the sins of the world” -John 1:29. Bible says Jesus is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world – I John 2:2, Romans 3:24 .

Sin is so horrible , it had to take only the spotless, matchless  blood of Jesus to atone for it, once and for all-Hebrews 10:12-14, Romans 6:10.  Bible teaches that on the cross, Jesus’s appearance was so disfigured beyond any human recognition because Jesus became sin -2 Corinthians 5:21.

Faith, not works

I want you to know that God has done all the work regarding salvation through Jesus Christ.   All that is expected of us, is to believe in Him as our savior -Romans 10:9-10. In John chapter 6:28, the crowd wanted to know what works they must do to have eternal life because Jesus had mentioned that they should not work for food that perishes but for food that endures to eternal life. The answer Jesus gave them in verse 29 is:  “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him (Jesus ) whom He (God) has sent.” This is it! Our only work is to believe ( have faith ) in Jesus Christ always.

We don’t earn salvation by our acts of holiness or by our performances. This is why, it is not everybody who attends church that is saved or it is not everybody who calls him or herself a Christian that is saved.  It is only those who have put their faith in what God has done through Jesus Christ that get to receive the free gift of salvation according to Ephesians 2:8.

When we accept and believe in Jesus Christ, God then seals us with His Holy Spirit as a sign of “ownership.”

Your sins are forgiven!

At the last supper on the night before Jesus was betrayed, this is what He said, “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins-Matthew 26:27-28. Forgiveness took place on the cross of Calvary when Christ shed His blood for the world  because without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins – Hebrews 9:22. Hebrews 2:9 says Jesus tasted death for everyone.

In fact, Bible says Christ put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself -Hebrews 9:26 . Forgiveness of sins was based on the sacrifice of Christ and not on the action of anybody. It is God’s gift of grace to the world- Acts 13:38 , Mark 3:28-29, Romans 6:10. Praise God that no matter how great the sins of the world is, God’s grace is greater. Truth is,  all  are forgiven but not all are saved even though the grace for salvation has come to all -Titus 2:11. It is only those who believe in Jesus Christ, who are saved – Acts 16:31, John 3:16 and therefore have eternal life .

Bible describes the one who is saved  in  2 Cor 5:17 as “a new creature”. The word of God in Romans 8:1 says,  you are no more in condemnation because your sins have been dealt with. Your past does not matter to God more than your present and continuous believe in and acceptance of what He has done for you through His son Jesus Christ. In Philippians 3:13, Apostle Paul says he forgets what is behind, and reach forward for those things ahead.

Jesus Christ has paid the full debt for your sins. What an incredible pardon!  He made the sacrifice for our sins conclusively.  He satisfied the wrath of God completely. Why are you then  walking around with guilt? This is the too-good-to-be-true-news, that many religious people find it hard to accept.

I  have been enjoying my salvation in Christ Jesus ever since I got hold of this truth, I can’t turn back.

Understand your salvation in Jesus Christ –(Part 2)

“…… for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”-Acts 4:12

Salvation which is an  eternal life, or an everlasting life comes from believing in Jesus Christ alone. Acts 4:12 confirms Jesus is the true certified author of our salvation . There is no other alternative and that includes the law of Moses -Romans 8:3. The whole plan of God for salvation unto man hinges on the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Yes ! The sacrifice Jesus made for the world is far greater than anything you can imagine. All that God expects from us, is faith in the atoning work of Jesus Christ. Your salvation is therefore an acceptance of what Christ has done, not an effort to get Christ to respond to you. Praise God!

It is particularly important for you to understand your status in Christ as a believer so you can enjoy your freedom in Him.  When you Know and understand the value of your salvation, you cease to be manipulated.

Before the cross

Separation from God by sin,  was the status of man before Jesus went to the cross- Romans 3:23. And while we were dead in our sins, God loved us , made us alive with Christ, forgave us all our sins and also reconciled us to Himself -Colossians 2:13-14, Romans 5:8 . Bible says, God did all that for us when we were still sinners and ungodly people not when we were righteous people-Romans 5:6. In fact, God made peace with enemies not friends -Romans 5:10.  All these were made possible through the one-time, for -all- time,  sacrifice of Jesus Christ- Hebrews 10:12.

Eternal life, Righteousness  & more

Our sins are forgiven. Praise God! But salvation must not be reduced to only forgiveness of sins. It should not be merely equated with a legal acquittal. To be acquitted is great news but salvation is more than just a judge acquitting a defendant. That is what God did for us plus more.

Salvation must also not be seen as  some kind of a fire insurance meant to keep us out of hell. The whole aim of salvation was not just to set us free from the penalty of sin, so we can escape hell and go to heaven. It is far bigger than that.  Let me explain this.

The eternal life assurance of our salvation-1 John 5:13, John 5:24 , means God would have still allowed Jesus Christ to die for us, so we can enjoy a relationship or fellowship with God again. This is because eternal life is a personal relationship with God by getting to  know Him and Jesus Christ  according to John 17:3. The use of “Know” in this verse is not just  “knowing of God” or knowing some facts about God but, “having an intimate and personal relationship” with God . In Philippians 3:8, Apostle Paul describes the opportunity of knowing Christ as a “priceless privilege and  supreme advantage” .

Eternal life is the reason why Jesus said to Martha, the sister of Lazarus in John 11:25; “The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;”. Eternal life is instant at the point when you believe and continues after death. You don’t get it only after death otherwise the Bible would not have used the present tense of the verb  “Have” when it said “that anyone who believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life”-John 3:16 (emphasis mine) .

For our relationship with God to be possible, God had to first make peace with man. The verse 19 of 2 Corinthians chapter 5 says , in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself not counting their trespasses against them,”- 2 Cor 16-19, Romans 5:10-11. Reconciliation means there is now peace between God and man through the blood of Jesus -Colossians 1:19-23. Hallelujah! Believing in Jesus then  leads to the gift of eternal life while punishment awaits those who reject the sacrifice of Jesus Christ  -John 3:16, 18, 36.

The good news is that we don’t only have a full pardon; we are also made righteous before God. This is a gift and not a reward for the good acts one undertakes including the long hours you pray or fast.  And that  is why our righteousness is by faith only  in Christ Jesus according to Galatians 3:24, 2 Corinthians 5:21 and Titus 3:4-7. When you understand that your righteousness is by Faith in Christ Jesus , boasting in yourself is eliminated.- Romans 3:27.

Don’t trust in yourself for righteousness because when you fall short,  your own conscience will condemn you. Any works should be the result of your faith in God , not a condition for righteousness.  Bible says any righteousness outside of Christ Jesus, is like dirty rags- Isaiah 64:6.

We were by nature, children of wrath as captured in Ephesians 2:1-3. But our belief in Christ Jesus has transformed us into children of God – Galatians 3:26. Hallelujah ! I like very much how this is written in John 1:12-“He gave us the right to become children of God”.  It is only those who have believed in the Son, that have this right. You are a child of God, let no one deprive you of this privilege.  Bible says we are “partakers of the divine nature”-2 Peter 1:4; we have “passed from death into life” (John 5:24).

As believers in Christ Jesus, the  Holy Spirit living in us is our our seal and He bears witness of our identity -Romans 8:16. The Bible says we are now members of the household of God- Ephesians 2:19, with a right to the inheritance of all the promises of God. There is neither Jew or Gentile, black or white. We are all presented with the same opportunity to know God -Galatians 3:26-29.  As a child of God, you have full access to your heavenly Father anytime, any day. You don’t need an appointment to speak to God. And you have confidence to approach God through Christ Jesus -Ephesians 3:12.

I want you to see Jesus at the center of your salvation always.  You are complete in Him according to Colossians 2:10. It is not what Jesus has done plus your performances, otherwise it ceases to be grace as captured in Romans 11:6. Our perfection is in Christ Jesus and our failures do not sever or jeopardize our relationship with Him. Remember,  your greatest doing is to “believe” – believe in Jesus who did it all for you at the cross! John 6:29, John 6:47.
